What is World Oceans Day?

World Oceans Day has been celebrated unofficially since its original proposal in 1992 by UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

World Oceans Day was officially recognized by the United Nations on December 5th, 2008, and was decided to be celebrated on June 8 since 2009. There are different themes on different World Oceans Days. This year, the theme for World Oceans Day 2017 was “Our Oceans, Our Future”

The Purpose of World Oceans Days

The ocean provides us with many resources and services including climate regulation and ecological cycle, which is very important to us. Taiwan was surrounded by sea and have many resources from ocean, however, our beautiful ocean was destroyed by plastic trash, so we need more people can join us to protect ocean and know more about our environment by World Oceans Day.

Environmental Protection Administration is working on ocean protection. They encourage ships to take their trash back from ocean and clean up the piers. For our beautiful ocean, let’s celebrate World Oceans Day with environmental Protection Administration and local government on July 22. We can know more about the importance of ocean trash and ocean pollution from this event.
